Choosing a contractor can feel like a big leap of faith. You are inviting someone into your home and trusting them with one of your biggest investments. I want you to feel confident about that choice, so here is a simple list of what to check before you hire anyone.

1. Licences for the right trades

Some work in Ontario has to be done by licensed or certified people. Electrical work should be done by an electrical contractor licensed through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Gas work should be done by a TSSA certified technician. Plumbers should be licensed too. Ask who will actually be doing the work and what licences they hold.

2. Insurance

Ask if the company carries liability insurance. Accidents are rare, but if something gets damaged, you want to be covered. A good contractor will not mind you asking.

3. Real reviews

Look at Google reviews, social media, and photos of past work. Pay attention to how the company replies to feedback, both good and bad. It tells you a lot about how they treat people.

4. A written quote

Never go ahead on a handshake. Your quote should list the work, materials, costs, and timeline. If you want more tips, read our post on how to avoid hidden fees.

5. Who handles permits

Bigger projects like basements, decks, and structural changes often need a permit from your city. Ask who will apply for it. Skipping permits can cause problems when you sell your home.

6. Clear communication

Do they call you back? Do they explain things in a way you understand? How a contractor talks to you before the job is usually how they will talk to you during it.

7. A realistic timeline

Ask when they can start and how long the job will take. A promise that sounds too fast may not be realistic. Honest timelines include time for inspections and material delivery.

8. How they leave your home

Ask how they protect your floors and furniture, and how they clean up at the end of each day. Respect for your home matters.
