When your heating or cooling works, you barely think about it. When it stops, it is all you can think about. Here in the GTA, a furnace that quits in January or an AC that gives up in a July heat wave is more than an inconvenience. It can make your home really uncomfortable, really fast.
The good news? Your system usually gives you warning signs first. Here are six I always tell homeowners to watch for, especially now, before winter settles in.
1. Strange noises
A gentle hum is normal. Banging, rattling, squealing, or grinding is not. These sounds can mean a loose part, a worn belt, or a motor that is struggling. The sooner it gets looked at, the better.
2. Water where it should not be
If you see water dripping from your indoor AC unit or pooling around your furnace, pay attention. It can point to a blocked drain line or another problem that can damage your walls, floors, and ceilings over time.
3. Weak airflow or uneven temperatures
Is one room freezing while another feels like a sauna? Does the air from your vents feel weak? Start by changing your filter. If that does not help, your system may need a closer look.
4. A burning smell or smoke
A dusty smell for a few minutes when you first turn on the heat in fall is common. A strong burning smell, or any smoke, is different. Turn the system off right away. If you ever smell gas, leave your home and call your gas company from outside.
5. Energy bills keep climbing
If your bills are going up and your habits have not changed, your system may be working harder than it should. Older units often lose efficiency little by little, so the change is easy to miss.
6. It turns on and off all the time
Short bursts of running, shutting off, then starting again can wear out your equipment early. It can be a thermostat issue, a sizing issue, or something else that needs checking.
What about the age of your system?
Most furnaces and air conditioners last somewhere around 15 years, give or take. If yours is getting close to that and showing any of the signs above, it may be time to compare the cost of repairs with the cost of a new, more efficient unit.
Simple things you can do today
- Change your furnace filter every one to three months
- Keep vents and returns clear of furniture and rugs
- Keep the outdoor unit free of leaves, snow, and debris
- Test your thermostat batteries
- Make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working
